fzr 1000 rumbling noise coming from exhaust

Hello there,
I'm asking this question more for my husband since I'm trying to find
an option besides him having to buy an r1... like say... fixing this
bike. I'm hoping maybe someone would have some input. Basically he
says "it sounds like a v twin instead of a straight 6" or something to
that effect... meaning there's a rumbling noise coming from the
exhaust. He thinks possibly a burnt valve which would... last time he
checked... cost 2k in and of itself. Are there any cheaper ways to
fix this issue or diagnose it? He says none of the local repair shops
will look at it since it's a 1990 fzr 1000 and they say it's too old.
